When you bought your home, chances are your garage was a square or rectangular space with a concrete pad and unfinished or scratched white walls. While it is unlikely you will choose to enhance your garage like your interior spaces, your garage doesn’t have to be dull and lifeless. There are lots of changes you can make to an otherwise empty space so that it offers increased functionality and maybe even looks a little better.
While keeping our cars safe from the environment is the traditional purpose of the garage, that’s rarely all the space is used for. Take a walk through your neighborhood one evening and peek inside open garages to see all that people store in them. Tools, toys, lawn equipment, sports equipment, trash cans, fishing poles and many more things live in our garage. With so many things stored in the garage, it’s not uncommon for cars to be parked in the driveway because there isn’t room for everything. With an organized garage, it doesn’t have to be that way. You can have room for your cars and other items if you want to.
Where do you start to make your garage more functional and a lot neater? The first place to start is always cleaning out anything you don’t want. Sort through each item and dispose of or donate items you no longer use or that are broken. After you have narrowed down the items you are keeping, figure out the best way to organize your space. There are many options for organization. From pegboards for tools, shelves to stack things overhead and hooks for bicycles, don’t fall in to the trap of leaving everything sitting. Put it where it belongs and you will notice a huge difference in your garage immediately. With a weekend of work and some creativity, you can give your garage a makeover and it will make your life easier and more organized.
Once your garage is nicely organized, why not enhance its style as well. Paint is the cheapest and easiest update you can make to your home and the garage can be any color you choose. No reason you have to stick with the most popular color of dull white. A weekend can really turn your garage into a well-organized space that will more than double your storage when you take the time to clean it out and get things off the garage floor. Well-organized garages are also a great selling feature when you are ready to sell your home. If you have other questions about upgrades that can increase your home’s value, give us a call today.
