Your Home, Your New Year’s Resolution

New Year's ResolutionsEvery new year, many of us commit to better health and wellness, but what if this year we don’t just better ourselves but also better our homes. Make a commitment in the new year to care for your home and therefore enhance your greatest investment.

Now that we have entered the winter months, it’s time to pull out your to-do list and start crossing off some of the items listed. If you haven’t looked at your to do list in a while, take a fresh walk through your home and see if there is anything new to add to your list. Note any small things that could turn into big problems. Be sure to check everything, from cracks in the ceiling to regular maintenance items that need to be addressed. Scan all of the walls, floors, ceilings, appliances, doors and windows.

Another resolution you may want to consider for 2021 is to tackle a remodeling project that you have been putting off. If you have coveted an updated kitchen, bathroom, or something else, make it your goal to accomplish the task in the upcoming year.  Regardless of the area you are remodeling, you can focus on energy efficiency. You can achieve this by merely replacing incandescent light bulbs with more efficient LEDs or go big by replacing home appliances with energy-efficient versions.

Even if you may not be able to afford a full remodel, there are still things you can do throughout your home. Consider smaller projects such as tiling your kitchen backsplash or applying a fresh coat of paint to the walls. Any of these renovations will ultimately add value to your home and are resolutions that can easily be accomplished.

Another resolution to consider is to make extra mortgage payments. Make it a goal to make one extra mortgage payment each year. This can be done by dividing your mortgage payment by 12 and adding that amount to each month for a year. Paying more that you are required can reduced the amount of interest you pay over the life of the loan significantly.

While your personal health is important, so is your real estate health. A few resolutions can make a big difference.  Anytime you have questions about your real estate goals, give us a call. We are here for you each and every day to ensure your greatest investment is properly cared for.
